❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is the fine for a PUC certificate expiry?

Under the Motor Vehicles Act, driving without a valid PUC certificate can attract a fine of ₹1,000 for the first offense, and up to ₹2,000 for subsequent offenses. In Delhi NCR, it's strictly enforced at ₹2,000. You may also face suspension of your driving license in repeated cases.

2. How long is a PUC certificate valid?

For BS4 and older vehicles, PUC is valid for 6 months. For BS6 compliant new cars and bikes, the first PUC certificate is valid for 1 year. After the first renewal, it reverts to 6 months. Electric vehicles are currently exempt in most Indian states.

3. How much does a PUC check cost?

The government-fixed rate is very affordable: ₹60-80 for two-wheelers and ₹80-100 for four-wheelers. Petrol pumps with PUC centres charge this standard rate. Never pay more, and insist on a computer-generated printout with a QR code.

4. Can I get fined for PUC even if my car insurance and DL are valid?

Yes. PUC is a separate mandatory document under Rule 115 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. Your insurance and driving license validity do not excuse a missing or expired PUC. Traffic police can issue an e-challan specifically for PUC violation alone.
